Blackjack Rules

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games today and its popularity extends across land based casinos, online casinos and now players can even enjoy live dealer blackjack games where they can interact with live dealers and fellow gamers from the comfort of their own homes. Also available are multi-hand games which allows the players to play several hands at one go.

So popular is the game that there are several variations on Blackjack that can be played but all of them follow the basic principle. You are dealt cards and the objective is to get as close to a total of twenty one with the cards you have been dealt without going over a total of 21.

Blackjack is played with a full deck without the jokers and the value of the number cards are counted as face value so two cards with 2 and 10 respectively would be worth 12. The value of Ace can either be 1 or 11 depending on what is a better combination to suit the player’s hand.

To play blackjack, the places a wager and is dealt two cards face up. The dealer also has two cards but one is face down. The player evaluates the total value of their cards and can make one of the following decisions:

  • They can Stand if the total is close to the 21. For example if the total is 19, the chances of getting a card that takes the total over 21 is higher than picking a card that has the value of 2. In such a situation, the player could Stand.
  • They can Hit which gives them an additional card and can continue hitting until they get as close to 21, to 21 or over 21. In the event of the latter, they Bust which means, they lose their wager.
  • The Double option is available if after the first two cards have been dealt it appears that the third card will allow them to beat the dealer’s hand. The bet amount becomes twice the original and the player is dealt one more card.
  • The player can Split their cards if the first two cards have the same value. The cards are split into two separate hands and a second bet is automatically placed equal to the original bet. The player then draws additional cards to each hand and plays each independent of the other.
  • The option of Insurance is available to the player if the dealer’s face card is an Ace. The player pays a higher wager to insure themselves against the dealer getting a blackjack. The higher wager is an additional half of their original bet. If the player does indeed get a Blackjack, the player is paid 2 to 1 on insurance so they don’t lose their original bet. The insurance amount is lost if the dealer does not have Blackjack.
  • A natural Blackjack is when the first two cards dealt are an Ace and a 10. This is an automatic win.
